"Although Cambodia has made progress in the past 20 years as regards implementation of the rule of law, protection of human rights and building democracy, we must state frankly that the measures taken by the Cambodian authorities in recent years represent a clear regression. The imprisonment of human rights activists, the silencing of perhaps the only independent media, and the illegal land grabbing and evictions clearly indicate that democratic values mean nothing to the Cambodian leadership. As Cambodia’s main supporter, the EU cannot stand idly by as the most brutal human rights violations take place in the country. The international community must call the Cambodian Government to account to ensure that the elections scheduled to take place in July 2013 are conducted democratically. Otherwise, we must review the EU-Cambodia Cooperation Agreement and the guarantees it sets out regarding trade preferences."@en1
