"Mr President, Pakistani teenager Malala Yousafzai, the victim of attempted murder by the Taliban, deserves the respect of all of us for her courage in the defence of the rights of children, especially the rights of girls. Children’s and girls’ rights in Pakistan are weak. A great deal of persuasion, legislative reform and especially changes in attitudes are needed in order for the situation of girls to improve. In her blog, Miss Yousafzai campaigned for girls’ education. In Pakistan, as in many other developing countries, parents often do not understand the importance of girls’ education to sustainable development for the benefit of society as a whole. Estimates of literacy levels among girls in Pakistan have fallen to such low levels that it is thought that only 12 % of girls can read. If Pakistan wants to develop as a society, it needs a generation that has received an education, a generation that is able to make Pakistan a better place."@en1
