Fortunately, I have heard that she is making progress. Her disgraceful, indeed, shocking case leads us to two depressing observations about the education system in Pakistan. Poverty forces many parents to send their children to madrassas where education is free. These madrassas are in fact where Islam, or Islamic studies, is a legal requirement, thereby promoting intolerant ideas, not only in relation to religious minorities, but also in relation to the education of women and girls. To sum up, the real problem in Pakistan is the completely inadequate funding of the education system itself. The fact that Malala comes from the Swat Valley, where only one in three girls goes to school, says a lot. The Pakistani authorities really cannot fail to respond to her unimaginable courage any longer. That should also be the urgent message from Brussels to Islamabad."@en1
