Even though the United Arab Emirates still has some way to go in this regard, there has been progress recently. Its ratification in 2012 of the UN Convention against Torture and the Convention Concerning Decent Work for Domestic Workers demonstrates its commitment to continued reform. In addition, its bid for membership of the UN Human Rights Council for 2013 to 2015 shows increasing commitment. There are clear signs that the United Arab Emirates wishes to embrace democratic values and comply with the relevant international standards. Certainly, we cannot overlook its past abuses, but they have been increasingly isolated and will continue to be as long as the authorities are committed to the reforms."@en1
