"Madam President, Commissioner, the free and exemplary elections that took place in Georgia, which we had the privilege of observing with some of our colleagues, have resulted in democratic change in that country, which is a great privilege in the region.
The irony, of course, is that those who won the election, and we must congratulate them, are also those who during the campaign complained about a dictatorship run by criminals. We can only hope now that these new leaders will be somewhat wiser and reasonable in government than they were at times during the campaign.
The European Union – as you did so successfully during your first trip to Tbilisi, it has to be said – must, without any paranoia or naivety, pay close attention to what happens in Georgia and judge the new authorities on their actions and their results, not just their declared intentions. It must also remain vigilant and remind those authorities that a change is not the same as revenge."@en1
