"The report under examination, by Birgit Schnieber-Jastram, focuses on the European Union (EU) report on Policy Coherence for Development. The objective of development policies is to eradicate instances of poverty throughout the world so that all peoples enjoy a life with a minimum level of quality, both in terms of safety and comfort. For this reason, various positions and measures have been taken to address instances of poverty that should shame so-called modern societies. The Millennium Development Goals, the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union and, more recently, the Europe 2020 strategy enshrine as a priority the reduction and long-term eradication of poverty which, as we know, essentially affect the more disadvantaged classes, children and women. Bearing in mind the opinions of the Committee on Employment and Social Affairs, the Committee on Fisheries and the Committee on Women’s Rights and Gender Equality, I am voting in favour of this report and hope that the recommendations it contains will be duly taken into consideration."@en1
