". I approved the resolution on trade relations between the European Union and Japan and on the appropriateness of launching negotiations on a free trade agreement (FTA). The purpose of any free trade agreement would be to encourage Japan to remove non-tariff barriers and other obstacles to trade. However, we, the Members of the European Parliament, in the resolution adopted, urge the Council to insert a clause into the mandate it gives the Commission providing for automatic review after one year, in order to be able to suspend negotiations if Japan does not show more willingness to open up."@en1
