". Gender parity is not an optional extra that we can choose to have or not, as we see fit. No, it is a question of civilisation. The European Union has always been at the forefront of this issue. The unaccountable reluctance and prevarication of the Council and members of the European Central Bank are therefore simply appalling. Promoting women to positions of responsibility is a question of external credibility, not to mention being an internal issue. The lack of diversity in these roles largely explains why the elite, particularly in the financial sector, are out of touch with reality. It is time we learned from the lessons of the past. With this vote, carried by a narrow majority, the European Parliament has shown that it was right to send such a firm message to the Council. We now expect action to be taken."@en1
