"The single market was born with the objective of strengthening the ties between citizens and Member States by creating an area without internal borders where people, goods, services and capital can move freely. In the year in which we are celebrating its 20th anniversary, it is sad to see that there is still a gap between expectations and reality: businesses and citizens continue to be obstructed in exercising their rights, and the economic and social crisis that has affected Europe since 2008 has certainly not made things any easier. This is why it has been necessary to draw up proposals for modernising the recognition of professional qualifications and access to public procurement contracts in order to relaunch the idea of a ‘single market’ and increase the trust of European citizens."@en1
