"Labour MEPs supported this proposal, which will allow EU citizens to seek consular assistance from the embassy of any other EU Member State. For example, if a UK citizen ran into trouble in a country where there is no British consular representation, they could apply for help to the embassy of another EU Member State and expect the same level of treatment as if they were a citizen of that state. In the cases of the revolution in Libya and the earthquake in Japan, large numbers of EU citizens could not access consular protection despite the emergency situation; this proposal will put an end to such a scenario and should ensure a faster and more effective response by allowing us to pool resources. This proposal is a good example of how European cooperation can benefit all European citizens."@en1
