I believe strongly that the UK should be an independent member state with its own foreign policy and its own embassies and therefore am against making it compulsory to give consular aid to non-UK EU citizens where this decision has not been reached in a bilateral agreement between the UK and a third country. The proposal that diplomatic and consular services of all EU member states must give any EU citizen seeking help abroad the same protection that they give their own nationals paves the way for closing British embassies abroad and undermining the British presence internationally. It is up to individual countries to establish consular facilities overseas and offer protection to their own citizens."@en1
