I voted in favour of the report on the conclusion, on behalf of the European Union, of the Food Assistance Convention (FAC 2012). According to recent statistics, in 2010 an estimated 925 million people or 13.6 % of the world population did not have enough to eat. 98 % of the world’s undernourished live in developing countries. 60 % of them are women. Malnutrition is an underlying cause of more than a third of children’s deaths, an estimated 2.6 million a year.
I believe that the FAC 2012 will allow the EU to ensure that the most effective and efficient food assistance policy is put in place that responds to the food and nutrition needs of the most vulnerable populations, based on objectively identified needs. However, it is important to prepare the ground for longer term solutions with activities that facilitate the transition from relief to rehabilitation and recovery programmes, inter alia by strengthening production and local livelihoods, thus avoiding long-term aid dependency. The FAC 2012 is fully in line with the EU’s ongoing efforts to contribute to reducing poverty and eradicating hunger globally in the framework of the Millennium Development Goals."@en1
