The recommendation under consideration put forward by Mr Moreira, concerns the proposal for a Council decision on the conclusion of the Agreement between the European Union and the Republic of Moldova on the protection of geographical indications of agricultural products and foodstuffs. The EU and the Republic of Moldova also wish to protect geographical indications in order to improve the conditions of bilateral trade, promote quality in the food chain and stimulate the value for sustainable rural development. On 18 April 2011, the EU and the Republic of Moldova concluded bilateral negotiations aimed at extending the protection and use of the geographical indications system, thus avoiding misuse of EU GIs. According to the rapporteur, this Agreement not only provides sound protection for the EU interest, but also constitutes an ‘open door’ for closer trade relations between the EU and Moldova. Therefore, having regard to the opinion of the Committee on International Trade, I voted in favour."@en1
