". I support the report as regards the rapporteur’s assessments and the merit of the agreement. The EU is the Republic of Moldova’s main partner, accounting for slightly under half of all its trade. This is something that should not be underestimated, including from a political and cultural point of view, in an area characterised, since the beginning of the 20th century, by conflicting geopolitical interests. Concerning the specifics of the Agreement, it should be emphasised that a good third of imports from Moldova are agricultural products and foodstuffs. This is why we have a direct interest in supporting cooperation agreements and legislative convergence processes that promote a culture of quality and excellence in this sector, which, like fashion, is one of the sectors most vulnerable to fraud. Consideration must be given to the positive effects of protecting geographical indications (PGI) in terms of protecting farmland from speculation, a problem that urgently needs to be addressed in view of the recurrent tensions in the commodities market. Any initiative in this direction helps to spread a culture of protection of the public interest, including in terms of preserving habitats and rural economies."@en1
