".
The common fisheries policy (CFP) aims to guarantee the long-term sustainability of the fisheries sector. It is acknowledged that, within the CFP, fisheries management within the 12-mile zones has been a success. These results are attributable to the success of the Member States in managing fisheries. Given that the management of fisheries resources beyond the 12-mile limits, which has remained in the hands of Brussels, has been ineffective, I would be very much in favour of a decentralised regime. This would mean that Member States could manage fisheries beyond these limits, whilst cooperating on a regional basis, with the aim of greater national control. I voted in favour because I support the extension of the 12-mile limit for accessing fisheries resources off the coast of the Member States."@en1
