".
The EU common fisheries policy has had limited powers and has been weak at managing fishing. There continues to be a massive disappearance of fish species as a result of overfishing. This report addresses the two-year extension of the special 12-mile regime to protect the coast, which is the most vulnerable. I urge the adoption of the report in its current form, and I support the extension of the zone to 20 miles from the coast. Some Member States can address the protection of their coasts entirely on their own, but the minimum protection requirements must be set by the European Union. The report continues in the fight for the preservation of fisheries as an industry for the next generation, and this is why I voted for its adoption."@en1
