". − Fisheries continue to be essential for a large number of local economies within the European Union. Despite the modest contribution made by fisheries to the economies of the Member States (less than 1 % in the majority of cases), many local communities depend on the incomes of more than 300 000 full-time and part-time fishermen who work within the Union. We must also consider industries related to the fisheries sector, which employ several hundred thousand people. At the same time, it must not be forgotten that this activity can only continue if there are enough fish. For these reasons, I believe a policy on the conservation and sustainable exploitation of fisheries resources is necessary."@en1
