". With the amendment to the 2012 budget submitted by the European Commission a strong signal has been given to the Member States to comply with their commitments. In April of this year the EU education ministers again confirmed the objective by 2020 of allowing 20% of European students to spend a period studying abroad. Of course the necessary funds must be available for this purpose. For the Erasmus programme it is therefore absolutely essential that the EUR 90 million shortfall for 2012 be made up as soon as possible. This will avoid students receiving a small Erasmus grant or none at all. If an agreement is not made quickly it will be the least well-off students in particular who have to give up their foreign study experience. As a way out of the crisis the European Union must resolutely take action in respect of the education and employment of young people. Study abroad adds to the profile of students who have recently graduated. Year after year more students study abroad. Now that the Erasmus programme is fully underway it is not a good idea to put it on the back burner."@en1
