lpv:translated text	"Madam President, the single market is one of the European Union’s greatest achievements and certainly represents one of the strongest pillars in the development of the Union, its Member States and its regions. However, in order for it to be efficient and fair, its policies must be based on the notion of equality of opportunities for citizens and for all regions, fostering the Union’s internal cohesion. Within this context, we need to acknowledge that we can only achieve greater development in our most remote regions, such as the outermost regions, through their greater integration into the single market. Regions such as the Azores need to continue to increase their competitiveness, improving their conditions for competition, but we shall never be able to achieve that if we do not find better solutions to our accessibility issues in the field of transport. We could achieve that through specific instruments that provide a better response to the problems that arise because we are so far away. We therefore propose that the Commission should consider a specific programme, of the variety, as an essential instrument for the integration of such regions into the internal market."@en1
