"This report by Kristiina Ojuland concerns the proposal for a European Parliament recommendation to the Council on establishing common visa restrictions for Russian officials involved in the Sergei Magnitsky case. Sergei Magnitsky was a courageous Russian lawyer who died in a Russian prison, as a result of mistreatment, where he was being held after his arrest for fighting corruption in Russia. Despite all of the efforts made with the Russian Government to ensure that this case was properly investigated and that those responsible were tried by an independent court, the fact is that, despite the promises made by those in power, nothing has yet been done and this case continues to be raised at summits with Russia. This image of a lack of freedom and credibility is calling into question the consolidation of the democratic process, as reinforced by Russia’s membership of the World Trade Organisation, and is deterring investors. I voted in favour of this report and urge the Russian authorities to quickly resolve this case of human rights’ violation in the interests of the Russian community itself."@en1
