"As recent Eurobarometer surveys show, Europe is experiencing a crisis of confidence and trust. Since autumn 2009, the number of people who trust the EU has fallen by around 30 %. Given that next year we will celebrate the 20th anniversary of the creation of European citizenship and we will be less than a year from the European elections, it is a good idea to make 2013 the European Year of Citizens, a year for the citizens of Europe. In the hope of conferring on 2013 a symbolic significance, particularly in the current context, I voted for this text. It has become clear that the citizens do not have enough information about their rights as EU citizens. We must make every effort to ensure that the Year of European Citizens succeeds in raising citizens’ awareness of their rights. We also have to take effective measures to stimulate their interest in the activities of the European Union as that is crucial for the development of European democracy, which in turn is so important for the EU’s legitimacy. However, the success of this Year obviously depends on the financial resources allocated to it, and in this regard, I regret that its budget is so meagre."@en1
