"I welcome the adoption of this decision, for which I voted. The creation of a ‘European Year of Citizens’ is an excellent way to increase people’s awareness of the rights, and the responsibilities, associated with European citizenship. The initiatives proposed to achieve the objectives set out in the legislative text are to be applauded. However, the idea that the citizens themselves must also play an active role in strengthening these rights through their participation in civil society should be reinforced."@en1
