"Madam President, I voted in favour of the report, along with my ALDE colleagues, largely because it highlights the crucial role which SMEs play in our economy and their vital role in helping Europe out of the economic crisis. I am pleased that we recognise that a third of red tape and bureaucracy for SMEs derives from poor implementation by national governments.
Member State governments really have to get a grip here and make sure they do everything within their power to make life simple and straightforward for hard-working entrepreneurs who employ the vast majority of the workforce and generate the vast majority of GDP.
Legislation coming from Brussels and Strasbourg also has an effect, and we need to be more sensitive to business realities. It needs to complement existing best practice. It needs to safeguard workers, consumers and employers, while also being smarter, more streamlined and less onerous.
Finally, the problem of access to finance cannot be underestimated. Banks are still failing to lend to the people and businesses that they ought to lend to, having spent years lending to people they ought not to have lent to. SMEs are finding innovative ways of sorting finance, but the banks and governments need to do more to support businesses that are viable. This is vital to ensure not only their short-term survival but also their long-term growth and ability to create new jobs."@en1
