"Madam President, I voted in favour of this report. Support for SMEs during the current financial crisis is important, because they play a significant role in maintaining employment and welfare and in promoting growth. The vast majority of new jobs are being generated in SMEs and especially in businesses in new sectors. SMEs are the backbone of the EU economy.
As far as the report is concerned, it supports the implementation of the Europe 2020 strategy, which will help the EU to try and increase its competitiveness in the face of increasingly intense global competition. The report also sets out how we could truly make European businesses more international.
Of the individual themes in the report, I would like to highlight the Erasmus programme aimed at young entrepreneurs. By supporting entrepreneurship among young people, we can also intervene in youth unemployment and prevent the marginalisation of young people."@en1
