"Madam President, the entire Group of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe voted for discharge for this agency. In our vote, we had to balance the assertions that indicate an element of corruption – but without having seen the report of the European Anti-Fraud Office or any relevant authority – with the report of the Court of Auditors, which expresses criticism but does not make any accusations, with the statements of the two Commissioners who evaluated the Agency’s management (I am referring here to Commissioner Potočnik and Commissioner Šemeta) and the statements of a board comprising mainly prestigious bodies, especially Cambridge University. All of this indicates that those involved in the Agency’s management appreciate its performance and its leadership. Mere suspicions alone should not prevent us from granting discharge for a European agency. It is only natural that such suspicions be backed up by evidence. What would happen if tomorrow we refused to grant discharge for the Commission because it was alleged in some newspaper that Mr Barroso had who knows what sort of important business in a Member State, yet these were just harmful allegations?"@en1
