"Madam President, ladies and gentlemen, 2013 will rightly be the Year of European Citizens. This is an important initiative because recalling and enhancing awareness, in particular among young people, of the rights and achievements attached to European citizenship should be treated as an absolute priority. Today, thanks to the process of European integration, EU citizens may live, work, study and travel freely within the territory of the Member States, use the health services, enjoy rights and protection as passengers and consumers, and vote and stand as candidates in elections to the European Parliament and in municipal elections in their Member State of residence. These are important achievements, which bring with them not just a strong symbolic connotation that strengthens and promotes the sense of belonging to Europe, but also undoubted advantages and practical opportunities. However, according to a Eurobarometer report, and as I can confirm on a daily basis in my work as an MEP, there is often a lack of awareness of these rights, and of the values and principles that inspire them. It is therefore essential to make every effort, particularly in the schools but also elsewhere, to raise awareness of and provide information on the great advantages of our dual citizenship, the European aspect of which enhances and strengthens the national aspect."@en1
