"Experts on the global economy have stated that 2013 will be equally as difficult as the preceding years of the crisis or possibly even worse. In these circumstances, it is natural to curb or make cuts to national budgets. The European Union budget, however, is a different type of budget: it is an investment budget, funds from which are used to promote entrepreneurship and activity, to create jobs and to boost innovation and growth. In times of crisis, the Member States often abandon investment, in particular social investment, which, in my opinion, is crucial if we are to emerge from the crisis, maintain growth and retain competitiveness. That is why I voted in favour of increasing the EU budget, which will help us to implement the growth pact that has been adopted. At the same time, I have constantly stressed the need to make savings in every European institution. Parliament is also making savings, as its budget is shrinking in real terms, if the proportion of resources given over to Croatia’s accession to the EU is taken into account."@en1
