"Madam President, I have asked to speak in this final debate in support of amendment 72, initiated and tabled by a number of Members. This amendment refers to direct payments in agriculture and aims to replace the idea of reducing the existing gap with the idea of converging direct payments between the Member States. The difference between the two ideas is very clear and very significant.
This Parliament, through a number of resolutions, has pronounced in favour of equal treatment of Member States in terms of agricultural payments. It seems that the idea is not valid for the moment but perhaps it will be in future. In today’s resolution Parliament effectively gives a mandate to the President of the European Council for future consultations. This mandate is incomplete without the legitimate and well-founded aspirations of Eastern European citizens."@en1
