"Mr President, the debate on passenger rights in all transport modes is undoubtedly important. The report makes positive recommendations on matters such as passenger information and the rights of people with disabilities or reduced mobility, among others. It is difficult to understand, however, why the expression ‘public services’ does not appear a single time in the report’s 15 pages. The first and most important right of passengers and of the population is the right to a high-quality, modern, efficient and functional public service at accessible prices. This debate therefore cannot disregard the process under way involving the destruction of the public transport service in countries such as my own, Portugal. This destruction is driven by the European Union and the IMF, and involves the withdrawal of services, soaring prices, a decline in quality, loss of workers’ rights and dismissals, all in preparation for a privatisation that will inevitably bring about an even greater deterioration in the service provided. Passenger rights cannot be discussed without reference to all these issues."@en1
