"Mr President, micro-businesses and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are suffering in this time of economic crisis because of difficulty in accessing the funding they need to develop. A total of 85 % of new jobs in the EU in 2002-2010 were created by SMEs. Industry plays a key role in the European economy, creating 25 % of direct private-sector jobs in the EU, and representing 80 % of private research and development. We are in favour of increasing and rationalising the support given to SMEs at EU, national and regional level to access the single market and third-country markets, especially in the areas of promotion and access to information, protection of intellectual property rights, participation in public tenders, information technology and communications, standardisation and regulatory matters. I commend the new Programme for the Competitiveness of Enterprises and SMEs (COSME) and ask that the various EU instruments for access to credit be simplified and rationalised."@en1
