"Mr President, air traffic is of crucial importance for the economy of the European Union: on the one hand because of its role in connecting people and regions, and on the other because it employs more than three million people and contributes more than EUR 140 million to our GDP. At the same time, these airlines are engaged in a hard struggle, since they are exposed to unequal competition conditions created by rapidly expanding airlines in the Middle East. European airlines have been criticising the airlines of the Gulf States for years now, owing to the high level of state aid on the one hand and, on the other, the fact that these companies do not have to pay corporation tax either.
In contrast, European airlines may not receive state aid, they must pay corporation tax, and they may not even participate in European export-credit guarantees. These factors combine to create an unequal competition situation, and I would like to ask the European Commission to remedy this immediately."@en1
