"The case of Ramil Safarov should be viewed in the wider context of the ever deepening conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan. Every day, the situation becomes more complicated. The rhetoric on both sides is increasingly aggressive and does not hide the fact that steps are being taken towards an armed conflict. It is enough to mention today’s declaration by the Azeri authorities stating that the visit by the Armenian President to the ‘occupied territories’ of Nagorno-Karabakh would be treated as a hostile act against Baku. Yerevan has been using similar rhetoric: a few months ago came the declaration that, in the coming conflict with Azerbaijan, the Armenian army should create a new frontier with Russia. The main allies of the two parties, Russia and Turkey, are well aware of the situation and have been massing their armies on the border with the Southern Caucasus. The only thing that we can now do is to debate, following another blunder of EU diplomacy, which was to strengthen foreign policy activity in the light of the ‘Arab Spring’ to the detriment of the Eastern Partnership and the Black Sea Synergy. The European Union does not play any significant role in this region, which is vital for our energy security. We have handed the area over to Moscow and Ankara, who are not concerned about peace but about extending their territory of influence. What is worse, there are still no signs of any change in the policy conducted by Brussels."@en1
