"Mr President, as parliamentarians, we have been under quite a lot of pressure to abandon this resolution. I cannot quite understand the view of the Group of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe that we should not say anything about this issue, because it is extremely important, given the unrest in that region. Furthermore, this is an urgent matter and we should specifically endeavour to say something that will ease the situation there. The Hungarian Government has posted a statement on its website to the effect that Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Justice had assured Hungary that Safarov would continue to serve the remaining part of his sentence in Azerbaijan. Unfortunately, that was not the case and, instead, he was pardoned and promoted, and he became a sort of national hero. It is extremely important that we condemn the way in which Safarov was treated in Azerbaijan. We must also do everything to ensure that relations between the countries in the region, Armenia and Azerbaijan, are restored peacefully and that neighbourly relations can continue between them."@en1
