"Mr President, the resolution before us today is one of these texts on which we have had rather surreal negotiations. For reasons that I fail to understand, the Group of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe has withdrawn its signature.
Yet the facts speak for themselves. The Hungarian Government has given in to the age-old pressures of the Azerbaijani authorities by agreeing to transfer Ramil Safarov, who committed an horrific crime against a young Armenian lieutenant, Gurgen Margaryan, and who was sentenced to life imprisonment for this crime. When he arrived in his own country, Mr Safarov was considered a national hero and was immediately pardoned and even rewarded. Relations between Azerbaijan and Armenia certainly did not need this.
The European Union should not allow one of its Member States to act in this manner: adding fuel to the fire instead of entering into negotiation efforts, as others have, in order to finally find a solution to the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.
I am not as diplomatic as Ms De Keyser, and I would say that unfortunately, we are used to seeing Mr Orbán only showing concern for the values and positions of the European Union when it suits him."@en1
