"Mr President, clearly, the events of the past months have been shocking, and the extent of violence suffered by the Rohingya Muslim community in Burma/Myanmar has repulsed people into reaction. But there has been a complete lack of reaction from one quarter. It has absolutely amazed me that the very person in whom we have vested so much trust to uphold our values, Aung San Suu Kyi, to the extent that we have put pictures of her in our parliamentary building in Brussels, remains completely silent.
Aung San Suu Kyi, these are your people. They have been displaced, they have been killed, they have been raped, they have been tortured – and from you we have nothing but silence.
We call for an immediate end to that violence. We call for immediate access to humanitarian assistance, rehabilitation, the return of those people to their homes and the immediate restitution of their property. The authorities need to know that they have to protect the Rohingya people. President Thein Sein has to receive that message clearly. He has to grant them nationality and uphold their human rights."@en1
