"Mr President, the issue of breaches of human rights in Burma is once again the subject of public debate. The eyes of various international organisations are on the religious conflict between Muslims and Buddhists living in Burmese territories. Statements from the authorities there are trying to deflect attention from the current situation, saying that the problem is an internal issue and should not be publicised in the international arena. The Rohingya, who are a Muslim ethnic minority, live in the northern part of the Burmese state of Arakan. Even though they number 800 000 people, the authorities do not recognise them as an ethnic minority and many Burmese see them as illegal immigrants from Bangladesh. Thus, the Muslim Rohingya are in no-man’s-land, since Bangladesh does not want them back. According to reports by Amnesty International, they are subject to various types of extortion, their lands are confiscated and they are forced to move and to carry out forced labour on the roads or in military camps. Such practices, leaving aside the breaches of their other fundamental human rights, are discriminatory against this population. The European Union should help Burma by becoming actively involved in cooperation to implement social, political and economic reforms."@en1
