"Mr President, although the Burmese Government took several promising steps recently in order to facilitate the democratisation of the country, we can see that discrimination against a single community can lead to a bloodbath and can call into question the country’s actual commitment to reforms. I therefore believe that the resolution adopted by Parliament today is very important, as it sends a clear message to the Burmese Government. We are closely monitoring the situation, and we consider the persecution of even a single minority to be unacceptable. Respect for human and minority rights is part of what constitutes a democratic system of government.
What the European Union wants is for Burma to join the ranks of democratic countries. This, however, is impossible as long as members of a community are being persecuted on ethnic grounds. The message of today’s resolution is the following: we must draw a clear line and stand up for the values we expect all our partners and, of course, our own Member States to respect."@en1
