"Mr President, Commissioner, the position of the Muslim minorities, especially the Rohingya Muslims, has become steadily more difficult in Burma. The situation became critical at the start of June, when a crowd of Buddhists killed ten Muslims in revenge for the alleged rape of a Buddhist girl. According to international sources, some Burmese Buddhist monks are intentionally stirring up tensions between religious groups, and Muslims are a particular target. The Rohingyas have lived in Burma for centuries, but the military junta stripped them of citizenship in 1982. Nor do they belong to any of the 135 or so legally recognised ethnic minorities in the country. The roughest estimates suggest that we will soon have a case of genocide on our hands. Although, recently, we have had encouraging and good news from Burma, it is quite clear that the international community must not turn a blind eye to the situation. We have to remember that these processes of change are only in their infancy. The international community needs to focus attention on this case."@en1
