"Mr President, since 2011, the Burmese authorities have given several signs of opening up. It was not difficult, considering where we started, but let us not be fooled. The inter-religious violence which hit the region of Arakan and, in particular, the repression that followed, are unacceptable. They show, once more, the situation of the Rohingya minority, one of the most persecuted groups on the planet, according to the UN.
On 12 July, President Thein Sein himself had the nerve to declare that the only solution for putting an end to the violence was to expel the Rohingyas and, since the beginning of August, the Dacca authorities have expelled three charities coming to their aid.
To conclude, I will simply paraphrase a representative from Human Rights Watch. How would the international community have reacted to the supposed changes? It seems to be blinded by the signing of trade agreements and continues to lift sanctions, even when abusive practices continue. That speaks for itself."@en1
