"Mr President, following the incident in May, violence between the Buddhist majority and the Rohingya minority has once again flared up in Burma. Systematic, state-led discrimination against the Rohingya Muslims has not gone away, even though civil liberties have been extended since President Thein Sein’s rise to power in spring 2011. Political prisoners in the country have now been released.
Now we are talking about hundreds of dead representatives of the Rohingya minority and tens of thousands of them who have been driven away from their homes. The conflict has gone on for hundreds of years. President Sein needs to be sent a strong message that we will by no means turn a blind eye to the treatment of this minority and how these people are being forced to leave their homes. Civil rights and freedoms must apply to everyone living in Burma, regardless of faith and background. This is not a political request: I want to remind Burma of its obligations under international law."@en1
