"The clashes between the police and striking miners in South Africa resulted in a toll of 34 people killed, plus 10 more killed in the days preceding the event. This massacre shows that South Africa has many challenges ahead. As regards this situation, I support the initiative of the establishment of a judicial commission of inquiry to investigate the facts leading to these extreme acts of violence and I express my confidence that all those responsible will be held accountable for their actions. Lives that were lost represent an irreparable damage. There are important steps that can be made in order to avoid the recurrence of such a situation ever again. The South African authorities should make robust and consistent effort to strengthen the rule of law and human rights, to ensure equality and to eradicate corruption, which I believe can contribute in important ways to the socio-economic development of the country. The police regulations and country’s labour dispute mechanism also should be reviewed. Hence, I gave my support to this resolution."@en1
