"Mr President, the massacre at the Marikana platinum mine is the most bloody incident of this kind since the end of apartheid in South Africa. A critical analysis needs to be carried out of the developments in social relations in this country following its liberation from the nightmare of racism. However, above all, I think that the investigations triggered over the killing of 34 miners must focus, in particular, on the police officers who brutally opened fire. It is appalling that 270 workers are due to face criminal charges for the death of their own colleagues. We call for an impartial investigation because, otherwise, there is the risk of anger flaring up again. It is time for us to remind the African National Congress that it promised a better life for all inhabitants in the post-apartheid era."@en1
