"Mr President, I am obviously concerned, like other colleagues are, by the situation in South Africa, and I condemn the violence used by the police to crush the miners’ protests. It goes without saying that we respect the South African miners’ trade union rights. On the other hand, I cannot help but wonder whether they are somehow falling into a trap set by an unscrupulous leader. I believe that Julius Malema has exceeded his role as negotiator and is now taking advantage of the social unrest to flex his political muscle. I regard his call for an illegal general strike in all mines in South Africa as an incitement to violence. The content of what Malema said to some former South African soldiers led yesterday to a state of high alert being declared, and these actions definitely concern us. However, I hope that public good will prevail and not partisan interests."@en1
