"Mr President, I wish to associate myself with the comments by Mr Tannock, who I believe has got this absolutely right with regard to the complexity of the situation. I condemn without hesitation and unequivocally the unwarranted killing of the 34 miners. It is a complex situation. Before the killings took place, there were murders and attacks on police and security staff and other mine workers and therefore we must be careful before jumping to conclusions. I believe President Zuma and his government have acted accordingly and have got it right. We must await the outcome of the judicial inquiry but, more importantly, we must remove the root causes of this tragedy and the unrest. They are socio-economic causes and they must be dealt with. We must also, as Mr Tannock rightly said, contribute in conjunction with our South African partners to improving policing capacity. As to the reason that I have not co-signed the motion – and I did negotiate this – it is because I objected to the word ‘massacre’ in the title. I think it jumps to conclusions; I think it jumps to a conclusion on what the judicial inquiry is undertaking and it is an emotive and subjective view."@en1
