"Mr President, the Republic of South Africa is an exceptional country. On the one hand, it is the most developed country in the region and it can have a positive effect on many neighbouring countries. On the other hand, it is exceptional in the developed world in that there is probably no country in the world that is as dangerous as South Africa. For years, people have been leaving the country for reasons of safety. Those who used to be the victims of the apartheid system are also leaving the country. There is no doubt that the tragic events at the Marikana mine should encourage the South African authorities to take decisive action. It is not just a question of providing an honest explanation of the direct causes of the tragedy and identifying the people responsible, although this is, of course, important. Over the long term, it will be more important to neutralise the structural causes of such a sudden outbreak of violence. The paradox is that, in the opinion of some experts, the differences between rich and poor have been greater since the fall of apartheid. One can identify what is responsible for this phenomenon: corruption, hypocrisy and a lack of the right policies. South Africa faces the risk that populism and nationalism may be used as a medicine for its present troubles. We hope that this does not happen to South Africa."@en1
