"Mr President, I will not hold it against you. The Confederal Group of the European United Left – Nordic Green Left was going to be in third place for once. It does not matter. The end of apartheid and the coming into power of Nelson Mandela in 1994 held a great deal of hope for the whole world. However, 15 years later, for thousands of South Africans, the hope of emancipation is far from becoming a reality. After several years of self-sufficiency, South Africa has become involved in globalisation and wanted to integrate into the global capitalist economy, but at what price? More than 50% of South Africans share less than 8% of the country’s income, while 10% have a monopoly over 58% of its wealth. There is no need to tell you which group is white and which is black. Yes, there is economic apartheid. All of this comes at a price and this summer’s strike in the Marikana gold mines, where thousands of miners, both black and white, gathered together, was an indicator of this social failure. The unprecedented violence with which the South African police responded, killing dozens of people, is totally unacceptable, as is the legal repression that followed and hit the miners themselves. The political authorities, and particularly President Zuma, seem to have reacted since then. We can only welcome this and encourage them to pursue this process, but let us not forget that this was not an isolated incident and that, in 2010 alone, police violence led to 858 deaths. I am pleased with the balanced resolution that we are going to vote on. Let us hope that it will contribute to bringing about change in this country."@en1
