"Mr President, this is not a tragedy; it is an out and out massacre. That is why I wanted us to keep this title because, with 78 people injured and 34 dead among the striking miners, I would call that a massacre. What we find a little upsetting is the fact that this has happened in a friendly country, which fought hard against apartheid, and the fact that South Africa was, up to a point, a sort of model. However, even with friendly countries, even with model countries, we must be able to tell the truth. Moreover, I think that President Zuma understands this. Today, he is leading an investigation, which started off very badly, I admit, because initially it was the miners, who were striking against unacceptable working conditions, who were accused of assassination. However, I think all of that is now back on track. What I am calling on Europe to do, in its relations with African countries, is to look very closely at the corporate social responsibility of the companies working there. In this sense, we feel somewhat responsible for what has happened in South Africa."@en1
