"Banking union is the most ambitious solution devised so far in relation to the debt crisis and risks relating to the banking system. However, there are a number of risks which need to be taken into account. There are serious warnings about the risk of a banking union putting banks in Eastern Europe with local capital at a disadvantage when facing unfair competition from the big banks in the euro area. It also seems that the decision-making body will be made up only of representatives from euro area Member States. There is the problem, for instance, in the event of a major risk, of a decision being made to withdraw capital from the branches in Eastern Europe to stabilise the parent banks in the euro area.
I endorse this project, provided that the position of the countries outside the euro area is regulated fairly when decisions made at banking union level will affect all 27 Member States."@en1
