"Madam President, I would like to congratulate my colleague, Ms Geringer de Oedenberg, on her excellent work and the compromise she has reached. I think that today, we can send two important and significant messages to our citizens. The first is that we have a great opportunity to speed up the digitisation of cultural works in Europe: all those hundreds of thousands of works that today are kept in the archives of museums and libraries and that cannot, for legal reasons, be made more widely available. Young people today – and this is particularly the case with young people – are mobile, so the issue of searching for cultural works is of profound importance and this is, in practice, available only via the Internet. Secondly, thanks to the legal provisions that we are considering today, there will be an opportunity for all public institutions, libraries and institutes of learning to offer the possibility of publishing these works. I believe that all the solutions that have been used here, including mutual recognition of works, could be a good step in the direction of making cultural heritage in the European Union very widely available. Many congratulations to all those who worked on this directive."@en1
