"Madam President, I also very much welcome the fact that we have reached an agreement on this matter that enjoys broad support here in Parliament and that will finally also have been accepted by the Member States in the Council. For this, I would, of course, like to thank our rapporteur, Ms Geringer de Oedenberg, and everyone else who has worked on the report, in particular, Ms Thein from the Group of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe. I hope and believe that the directive will be an important first step in solving the problems that have surrounded orphan works, particularly in the digital age in which we are now living. It has been hard to find a good balance between safeguarding the facility for libraries and archives to make literature available, including orphan works, and having reasonable rules to protect authors, who have nevertheless created these works that, with time, have come to be orphan works, but which can still give pleasure and hope and a belief in the future to readers of our time. I believe that we have found a reasonable balance in this directive. For this, I would like to offer my sincere thanks to everyone involved."@en1
